While I was living in the United States for
seven years, I was fortunate to have had hands-on experience
in various dance traditions from West Africa (Congo, Senegal,
etc.), the Caribbean islands(Trinidad, Haiti, Cuba, etc.),
and Brazil. These traditions are either from Africa or have
their roots in the African continent. I am currently working
on so-called "Afro-Brazilian Dance," a dance culture
of black people in the Bahia area of Northeastern Brazil.
It offers a mixture of unique movements, steps, and various
rhythm patterns. I feel I have started to incorporate these
characteristics, and am about to establish my own dance style.
Of course, I cannot altogether erase the influences of dance
styles that I have had experience with, so I can not present
my dance as "This is the pure Afro-Brazilian dance."
It would be more like"Afro-Brazilian dance a la Natsuki."
With this dance and music, I hope to present universal expressions
for what I feel in my everyday life, as an individual who
lives in Tokyo and as a citizen of the planet Earth. I think
that Afro-Brazilian culture's multiethnic background creates
a fertile continental generosity where people can always welcome
fresh ideas.
